Adelaide DJ-producer Tevlo will open the Oh Yes Festival with his catchy keytar and electric production after winning this year’s Fresh 92.7 Jumpstart competition.

“It felt amazing [winning Jumpstart]. I think it's going to be a huge opportunity for me,” Tevlo says.

“A lot of the artists I'm going to be playing with I've been big fans of for years, so it's just a dream to be able to play with them.”

Oh Yes will be Tevlo's first large-scale event. “This is my first festival. It’s pretty new to me, but I think it's going to be awesome,” he says.

“I normally play a lot of smaller gigs like bars, and usually it's been small and intimate. So on a big stage, to a big crowd, is going to be a bit different. I'm a bit of a one-man band so to fill up the whole stage is going to be a bit of a challenge.”

Tevlo received the news he had won the festival slot live on Fresh 92.7 by one of his music role models, producer and DJ Just A Gent. “I've had the opportunity to talk to [Just A Gent] since and it’s been heaps cool,” Tevlo says.

“A few months ago, I got to see him live which was cool enough and now suddenly I'm talking to him and I got to do a remix for him and it’s just been awesome.”

The road to Tevlo’s success has not been short, having spent a decade-plus shaping his passion for electronic music. “I've been making music ever since late primary school, so it's been around 12 years now... I just got into and I've been doing it every day since,” he says.

Tevlo says that his love for electronic music blossomed after stumbling across Garage Band on his old family computer.

“My parents had an old Mac computer and on it was Garage Band. I just sat there for hours fiddling with it. They noticed how obsessed I was with it. My older brother knew about some better programs and he introduced me to what I use now. And that started it off with me. I discovered how much I could do with it all and it just opened the world of electronic music for me.”

New music is always in the works for Tevlo including an exciting collaboration with singer song writer Caroline Tucker. “I'm definitely making new stuff before the festival. I'm kind of working some edits of songs that I really like but making it my version,” Tevlo says.

“I'm also working on some new tracks with Caroline Tucker so I'm going to try release that before the festival and then perform it at the festival. She’s going to come on stage and sing it so that's going to be amazing.”

Tevlo says that he has been working with Caroline for months making each track perfect. “We've just been sitting their tweaking different things but it's been such an awesome experience working with someone who drives and pushes herself so much, it's making me want to keep up."

Tevlo opens Oh Yes Festival at Adelaide Showground 29 September.
