Are you young and passionate about live music, and willing to volunteer your time? Then the City of Sydney want you.
A new campaign has been launched searching for 'the next generation of live-music gurus to develop and deliver all-ages gigs'.
The Sydney Youth Music Team is a group of young music-lovers who volunteer their time to organise live-music events across Sydney, with the support of the City's Youth Services team and Music NSW. The group's main intention is to create drug and alcohol free spaces that still deliver high-quality live music, two notions not always seen as generally compatible.
But if you've ever been 15 and cried because you couldn't get into a show then you can realise the importance of having a program like this. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore agrees. “The City wants to help revitalise Sydney's live-music scene and also provide safe places for young people to go out with their friends and hear new bands.
“If you are aged between 12 and 24, this group is a great way to network with like-minded young people, while also gaining access to free workshops and seminars hosted by Music NSW.”
Team member Caitlin O'Neill began volunteering a year ago and has since worked on three major-events, including a recent show at Goodgod Small Club headlined by Bam Bam and Joelistics. “I wanted a hands-on approach to learning about the industry, to figure out if it was something I wanted to pursue and now I'm doing a bachelor of entertainment business management,” Caitlin says.
Even if you have no need for an all-ages gig anymore but you adore live music, visit the Sydney Youth Music Facebook page and sign up. Do it for your 15-year-old self. They'll think it's rad.
