Italian tech-house music duo Supernova feature the talents of producers Emiliano 'Emijay' Nencioni and Giacomo 'G.o.d.i' Godi, who bring their internationally-acclaimed live set to Circus Paradise Music Festival on the Gold Coast next year.
Balancing live instrumentation with turntables and Ableton, Supernova have created a distinctive DJ style that sets them apart from many of their peers. They have played some of the world's biggest dance and electronic festivals, including ElRow (Barcelona), Privilege (Ibiza) and Ministry Of Sound (London).
Emiliano and Giacomo have made music together as Supernova since the early 2000s and remain a sought-after live act. They also run their own labels Lapsus Music, Blackboard and Downtown Underground.
Ahead of the first-ever Circus Paradise Music Festival (from the the creator of Future Music Festival and Summafieldayze), the Supernova lads take some time to answer our questions.
You've been very productive in 2018 releasing new music and lots of touring; what have been some of the highlights?
We love to be productive. Music is our life since we were children and we feel lucky for that. 2018 has been amazing. We started many new projects. Two new labels were born: Downtown Underground and Blackboard. Lapsus Music released a lot of good music coming from masters of the electronic scene and young talented artists who joined the top of the charts several times. We released music on Mother Recordings, 8Bit, Moon Harbour, Elrow Music and Lapsus Music, and yes we travelled a lot between USA, South America, Australia and Europe.
How and when did you first start producing music?
We had separate careers before the Supernova project was born. We started working together as Supernova in 2002/ 2003, but we were already DJs and producers since the end of the '80s/ beginning of the '90s. We were kids :)
As a producer and DJ, what attracts you sonically to techno as opposed to other electronic styles?
We love music in general, but we feel techno [is] one of the most creative genres. Deep and warm bass [sounds], solid grooves and old-school Chicago house stabs are our favourite elements. It’s the most popular genre of the last 30 years and we are lucky to have lived it since the beginning.
How are you feeling about coming to Australia for Circus Paradise in March next year?
We love Australia and we are really excited to play for a festival like Circus Paradise.
What can crowds expect from your set at Circus Paradise?
We love to always give [our] best to our crowd. We feel pretty eclectic as DJ and producers, and we usually love to play our stuff from Supernova, Lapsus Music, Downtown Underground and Blackboard. We call it 'The House Of Super'. It’s our sound and it’s a mix of house, techno and what we feel at the moment coming from our musical background.
Have you been to Australia before (is it a preferred destination as part of your global travels)?
Yes, as we said we love Australia and we had the chance to play two times in Sydney for We Love, two times in Melbourne at Eat The Beat and once in Perth for MVMNT.
How are you spending Christmas and New Year's?
Usually we love to play close to our home [on] Christmas night and wherever [who] book us for NYE. This year we are going to play in Ukraine for Xmas and Rome for NYE. Only in 2007 and 2008 we were on the road during Christmas touring many days in China.
Best and worst Christmas gifts you have received?
An electric bass guitar and a Roland 909 as the best for sure and we forgot the worst. We are positive people :)
2019 is almost here; any new year resolutions?
Keep our style alive and be focussed on music as much as we can. Music is always the answer for us.
What songs and artists would we find in your personal playlists?
Have a look on our personal Spotify playlist called 'The House Of Super'
If you were in charge of choosing a festival line-up, who are some artists you would have headline?
Artists that look at the soul of the crowd.
When will you be back in the studio creating new music?
We bought a big studio five years ago where we have our separate studios plus meeting room, kitchen, bathroom and another small office room. We spent all the time of our life when we are not touring or with the the family. At the time we are writing you, we just released our new 'Buy Me A Drink' EP on Mother Recordings while December 14th 'The Black Milk' EP will be out on 8Bit. At the moment we are working on many new tunes so expect a lot of new music soon on Lapsus Music, Downtown Underground and, who knows? The recording studio is like a second house for us, it’s The House Of Super :)
Supernova join headliners Charlotte de Witte, Oliver Huntemann and Motez at Circus Paradise Music Festival, which takes place at Broadwater Parklands 10 March.
