Supercars Championship Seeks Racers For First-Ever Battle Of The Bands
Words

The race is on as North Queensland bands vie for a place on the podium at the first-ever Supercars Championship Battle Of The Bands competition in Townsville this July.

Burning rubber takes a backseat at the NTI Townsville 500 to give a selection of the region’s emerging musical talent some track time, with the bands competing for a once-in-a-lifetime prize pool sure to get their engines revving.

The winner will get to open for Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson

The winner of the inaugural Supercars Battle Of The Bands competition will get to perform in front of thousands when they open for Grinspoon frontman Phil Jamieson as part of the ‘Saturday Night Thrills’ concert. The champion band will have the opportunity to sing the Australian National Anthem on the race grid, the performance broadcast nationally and globally on FOX Sports, the Seven Network and Kayo.

First-place band also takes home a $5000 cash prize, along with claiming a hot lap, unique tour of the pit lanes and performing on Triple M in the lead-up to the event. The second-place prize winner will also perform on the Saturday evening and pocket a cash prize of $2000.

Not a bad way to top-off a day at the races.

“This is the first time we’ve gone out and engaged with the locals and the community as far as our concerts go,” NTI Townsville 500 Event Manager Sam Pearce says.

“We want to see what talent is in North Queensland and we want to be able to put that on show at what is essentially the biggest event in North Queensland annually.”

Battle Of The Bands is a first for Supercars and will celebrate North Queensland talent on and off the track. The prize package on offer could be what takes a local band from the pub circuit to a world stage, the chance of a lifetime.

“We’ll do our best to promote them, not only at the event but also on a social media channels,” Sam says. “We’ve got the national broadcast coverage. Whatever we can do the promote that band, we’ll do, and elevate their platform for coming along and being part of the fun.”

Entries are open to all bands and musical acts based in the North Queensland region.

To enter, bands from North Queensland simply need to upload a video of their best rendition of a well-known rock song to social media channels, using the hashtag #SupercarsThrills before 25 June. The best online performances will be named as finalists on 26 June.
From there fans will vote on Supercars.com for their favourite to claim the ultimate prize.

Although motorsports and rock music kinda go hand-in-hand, Sam encourages all willing North Queensland artists and bands to enter the Supercar Championships Battle Of The Bands. “It is very heavily focussed around the rock genre,” he says, “but we’ll take a look at anyone and if they’ve got the goods, they’ll be one of the support acts.

“High school garage bands, right through to established touring bands. Anyone who might be keen to be part of the bill, and support Phil Jamieson and put on a good show.”
