Sunshine Coast live music venue Solbar will pour their final drinks this weekend after almost a quarter century servicing the local scene.

The closure arrives closely behind The Station shutting down late 2025, and continues the trend both locally and nationally of venues struggling to remain viable as rising operating costs, changing audience behaviours, and ongoing economic pressures create unfavourable conditions for independent operators to survive let alone thrive.

Established in 2001, Solbar has been a beacon for the underground and DIY scene, offering a platform for local talent to shine while providing an alternative touring location for national artists.

Originally located in Coolum before relocating to Ocean Street in Maroochydore, Solbar has hosted weekly gigs as well as open-mic nights, with the mission to provide a 'high-quality, inclusive space where people' open to 'all walks of life' who 'appreciate artistic expression'.

"Solbar was created with nothing more than a genuine passion for live music," co-owner and co-founder, Dimitris Limnatitis says. "Fifteen years on, we've watched artists take their first steps on our stage and go on to perform on the world stage, and that's something we’re incredibly proud of."

While Solbar's legacy is undeniable, this news will still strike a dagger into the heart of the local creative scene, with a shared sense of loss felt across the community; from staff, artists, and patrons alike who have watched Solbar grow from a small local venue into what many describe as the beating heart of Sunshine Coast nightlife.

For the team, the closure represents not just the loss of a workplace, but the end of a shared creative community. "Solbar has always been more than just a venue. It has been a home, a family, and a place where countless memories were made," says Katie Mateus, Solbar's Marketing Manager who's been part of the Solbar team for 12 years.

"Many of our staff have dedicated over a decade of their lives to this space and the reluctant decision to close has been heartbreaking."

Adds Melissa O'Bryan, Solbar's Entertainment Manager: "For 15 years, we have worked hard at nurturing artists, to sound engineers, bar managers, chefs and more, and couldn't be more proud of our place in the local community and the music industry at large. To everyone that supported us back, thank you."

Although tinged in sadness as this chapter permanently closes, the team say their overwhelming feeling is gratitude. Gratitude to the artists who filled the stage. Gratitude to the staff who poured years of love and passion into the venue. Gratitude to the audiences who danced, sang, and made Solbar what it was.

For locals, Solbar will open for the final time on Saturday (28 February) with a cast of bands from the region who've called the venue home at various stages to perform one final time at Ocean Street.
