Iggy Pop has announced the death of Stooges drummer and founding member Scott Asheton.
"My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night," read the message on Pop's Facebook page. "Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron [Asheton, who died in 2009] have left a huge legacy to the world. The Ashetons have always been and continue to be a second family to me.
"My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life."
Asheton did feature on the last Stooges record, 2013's 'Ready To Die', but has been off the road since suffering an injury after the Stooges played France's Hellfest Festival in 2011. He was replaced on the road by Toby Dammit, though he did play with the band at their Austin City Limits set in October 2012.
