Sticky Fingers: Bodies Flying Everywhere

Sticky Fingers
Senior Writer.
A seasoned all-rounder music writer and storyteller with a specialised interest in the history of rock.

Fusing psych with reggae, rock and a whole lot of alcohol, Sydney's Sticky Fingers are on the road bringing their rambunctious brand of music to the masses.

With a third, studio album in the works and a full tour schedule taking the band into next year, Sticky Fingers' Seamus 'Hollywood' Coyle chats to scenestr prior to their performance at Originals Music Festival.

What are your plans for a follow-up to 'Land Of Pleasure'?
We're currently writing the follow-up album. The sound is a natural, healthy progression from the last – lots of cool shit poppin'. The fact that you can't pigeonhole a band to a certain genre these days is great because we have a plethora of sounds and styles being produced in the stu [sic]; always having fun making new music and keeping fans on their toes.

Best and worst experiences from your recent US tour?
Best: the debaucherous, five days in NYC leading-up to the Williamsburg show. Worst: the debaucherous, five days leading-up to the New York show.

How do you like to spend your downtime while on tour?
Don't really have downtime on the road, except I guess after soundcheck. In that case I'll watch 'Cops', or [have] a nice lager and a stroll.

Are there notable differences between your fans in different countries?
There are some rowdier countries with a few more bodies flying around the room, generally in Australia and NZ.

Do you prefer playing festivals or smaller, theatre shows?
Playing theatre shows, you play for longer, so [can] take people on more of a journey. Whereas at festivals you don't have as much time, which is also fun because you get in, blast 'em and then get out.

What are you looking forward to about playing Originals Music Festival?
Looking at all those pretty faces having a good time. Bands you want to see at the festival? I love Regurgitator... love how they rough their songs up live – make it more raw. Bootleg Rascal can get fucked. Lyall Moloney is a tripper. Pro Vita reppin' the Aussie accent. Love it.

What's the wildest show you've played to date?
We've played a lot of great shows over the years; latest one that rings a bell would be in Vancouver about a month ago – bodies were flying everywhere; it was 50 degrees in the room; there was sweat dripping from the roof; mic stands and speakers getting knocked over. Real fun.

How do your live performances differ to those on the records?
When we play live, we rough it up a bit, the songs are more organic-love playing live. The way bands are supposed to seen. In their true element.

Can you tell us a bit about the newly-constructed STIFI studio and rehearsal space?
We've always had a garage to practice in until last year, and you need somewhere to play and write. This space opened up and all we had to do was take directions on where to put the nail and hammer. It's the best thing we've ever done. I still sit in there and laugh to myself; can't believe we got this joint.

What is the ultimate goal for Sticky Fingers?
World domination.
