It's inevitable. When large crowds, alcohol, drugs and EDM mix... things are going to get a little wild.
With the excitement mounting as the clock counts down for Stereosonic, The Australian Red Cross are looking for volunteers to operate the save-a-mate (SAM) chill-out space.
“The crew talks to festival goers about safe partying, provides basic first aid and hands out water, sunscreen and other useful stuff like bandaids and earplugs” says Red Cross life skills officer Rebekah Sly.
“They help in the Chill Out space [as well], sitting with people who may be under the weather, offering water, a snack, and reassurance.”
The SAM Festival Crew works six-hour shifts, with a break, and volunteers also get free admission to the festival before and after their shift on the day of volunteering.
Bek says that the SAM message is all about harm reduction.
“Providing education and support to young people is in line with the Red Cross mission to improve the lives of vulnerable people by promoting humanitarian values and services”, she says.
“We deliver a non-judgemental message focusing on the actual harms associated with the use of a particular drug, rather than the just the drug use itself.”
Anyone over the age of 18 that holds a valid first aid certificate (with CPR component) and is able to commit to a full day training session can apply.
This opportunity is perfect for those who missed out on a ticket or couldn't afford the festival, and in addition to lending a much needed helping hand – you could potentially save a life.
Stereosonic Music Festival is on Saturday December 7 & Sunday December 8 (12pm – 10pm) at RNA Showgrounds.
