Steph Taylor will bring together a collection off Brisbane’s best jazz musicians to perform at the Brisbane Jazz Club later this month.
With Steph Taylor Quartet And Friends, Steph collects a group of her friends together to perform jazz and original-jazz standards with a few anecdotes thrown in. “We’re putting together a show with a lot of arrangements of really gorgeous, jazz standards and some original jazz tunes and some standards that have original lyrics that I’ve written myself.
"[The show is] with a band of musicians that I have been very lucky to have worked with previously on different gigs or projects,” Steph says. “We have a conversation on the stage that exists already, so I guess I wanted to put together this show with them and really focus on gorgeous standards because that’s really what I like to perform.
“This show is really about zoning in and performing the music that [I love] and playing homage to those who have done it before me. It should be a really good, entertaining night.
"Our concerts are always about entertaining the audience and taking them away for a couple of hours from real life and that’s kind of what I’m about as a performer. It’s about entertaining and having a really enjoyable night.”
Steph is one of Brisbane’s most involved young, jazz performers and has been performing as a professional singer since beginning her tertiary education in 2008.
After travelling to New York to continue her study of voice, jazz music and theatre, Steph gained new-found inspiration. “[Jazz is] the music that I’m really passionate about performing and I have a keen interest in the history of it and I’ve travelled overseas to get my hands on as much information and as much live music as I can,” Steph says.
[Update on 21 Dec: Steph's Brisbane Jazz Club show on 27 December has been cancelled. A replacement BJC show will be confirmed in the coming weeks.]
