The past two years have seen Perth indie rockers Spacey Jane take consistent leaps and bounds towards breaking onto the national music stage.

The group won the Needle In The Hay competition earlier this year for their single 'Thrills', which will now get a limited-run vinyl pressing and a video clip made for it as part of the prize.

The latest single from Spacey Jane is 'Cold Feet' and vocalist/ guitarist Caleb Harper says the track reflects the refinement of the band's approach to songwriting.

“It definitely felt like we focussed on being a little more minimalistic in the overall composition of things, trying to not put in more than was necessary and just focus on what we liked about the song,” Caleb says.

“Initially it was almost a six-minute-long song and when we were workshopping it to record we probably shaved about two minutes off it and just kept trying to focus on what didn't need to be doubled up and what didn't need to be in there or repeated.”

Formed in 2016, Spacey Jane also features Kieran Lama on drums, Ashton Le Cornu on guitar and Amelia 'Meils' Murray on bass, with Caleb taking the majority of songwriting duties. “My main focus is melodies and chord progressions,” Caleb explains.

“Initially when we started as a band I had this weird, controlling thing where I wanted to write everything and bring a package, whereas now I am very comfortable in just writing lyrics about things that come from personal experiences or feelings I'm having over a period of time and putting them together in the most concise way I can.”

“Then just really having a lot of confidence in everyone else's ability to come together and create the sound that I know we all want to hear.”

Having already released an EP ['No Way To Treat An Animal', 2017], a double A-side and a string of singles, the next job for Spacey Jane is figuring out what to do with all the new material they've been writing.

Even though they're not sure what will be coming, drummer Kieran says it will definitely be before the end of the year,

“We've got a few dates lined up, I'm not sure how much I can give away about that, but we'll definitely be putting out more stuff,” Kieran says. “We have a new single coming out in the next couple of weeks that will be also as part of a larger project due at the end of the year.”

Kieran goes on to explain that for a band like Spacey Jane that has already experienced steady growth with their current DIY approach to releases, they don't feel the pressure to produce a full-length album yet, if at all.

“Albums are a huge commitment and in our experience so far and what we generally work through with writing music is it would take a lot of time to produce enough material for an album, and a lot of shaving and trimming that the production commitment in itself would be expensive and huge,” he says.

“I don't think that we are really comfortable with that sort of commitment at this stage because we want to be producing content, we want to be writing.”

Spacey Jane play The Bird 28 September, The Sewing Room 5 October, Rosemount Hotel 19 October (supporting Psychedelic Porn Crumpets) and Fremantle Arts Centre 21 October.
