Smoking Martha will launch their new single, ‘All Lit Up’, complete with film clip, at West End hotspot The Bearded Lady later this month.
Singer Natasha 'Tasha D' Doherty explains what the single is about. “‘All Lit Up’ is a little bit of a chaotic song. It's about a mood going up and down, pretty much like every day life, and how people handle their emotions. It's a fun, bouncy song. When we play it live it’s an audience starter, people get crazy to it!”
The film clip for the single reflects the song's chaotic vibe. “It's got some fast cars, a bit of saloon fighting — everything to make it feel chaotic and crazy. We filmed at The Bearded Lady because we thought it would be a perfect setup, it has that kind of old-bar vibe to it and we wanted a kind of 'modern western' feel. We got in there and got a good bunch of friends in and got them to be a part of it which was really fun.”
Tasha D is looking forward to the single launch. “We're going to have the video playing on the night for the first time with a projector, and we've got a few other great, crazy-rock bands who are kind of '70s rock which will be fun. They'll be bringing down the house, then we'll play the clip and round it off by playing our show.”
‘All Lit Up’ is the second single from the band's debut EP, recorded earlier this year under the supervision of Powderfinger's Ian Haug. “We all grew up listening to Powderfinger. I still remember seeing them at Big Day Out when I was quite young, just in the afternoon chilling out on the grass. I think their songwriting is really great and they've done some fantastic stuff throughout their history.
"The best part about working with Ian was his attention to detail when it comes to tone. He basically tried every kind of tone through every amp and every guitar just to get the right sound. The guys loved it, because they got to play with all these guitars and they were just in heaven. He was really great to work with.”
When Smoking Martha take to the stage, expect a wild ride from the outset. “We want them to come away singing our songs and having a ball, to realise how much fun it is to go to a live gig, and to have that experience our parents had when they were young in the '70s and they used to go to live venues all the time and watch live music.”
Smoking Martha play The Bearded Lady on Friday 21st November.
