The future of stoner rock, Slomosa make their Australian debut later this month.
They'll bring their signature Norwegian sound they've coined 'tundra rock' to club shows on the east coast.
Slomosa takes inspiration from the likes of Kyuss, Queens Of The Stone Age and Mastodon to create a modernised blend of stoner rock.
Vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter, Benjamin Berdous sits down somewhere in Colorado Springs for a smoke as he joins the Zoom call. "It's 420 [Day], we're in the 420 state, so it's pretty good," he admits.
They're in the middle of their Breaking Ice tour across America and they've sold out 14 of 17 shows. Berdous is loving each night.
While passing through LA, the band drove deeper into the desert to meet one of their icons, the legendary Kyuss vocalist, John Garcia.
For Berdous, Kyuss is "the biggest band in my world" and he's crossing these meetings with each member off his bucket list.
Now he only has one more Kyuss member to meet. "Our first tour ever was with Stöner, a super group with Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri. So this is the third Kyuss [member we've met].
"So touring on our first tour with Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri, when that offer came in, I thought they were joking; this booking agency that we just started working with. We didn't know what they had to offer. We don't trust that many people.
"Touring with those guys, on the first tour, it's the most mind-blowing experience. Then meeting John now, who's an extremely nice guy. A legend if you ask me, from a legendary band. I'm proud and they like [our] band, which means a lot."
If getting the nod from the pioneers of stoner rock isn't enough, Slomosa have also toured with Mastodon, Helmet and Alkaline Trio. They've also been personally invited to TOOL's rehearsal space to meet the band.
These are massive endorsements to have behind a band that only have two albums in their discography. The next mountain to climb is album number three.
Berdous shares they've been recording some demos but as a self-proclaimed perfectionist, there's still work to be done.
"I'm the main songwriter, so I work when I feel the inspiration on the road and at home. I kind of think, don't change your winning team, in my methods," Berdous chuckles.
"There isn't a formula to the music. It's just step by step over time; I appreciate time and value time, when it comes to making music.
"In a way, I feel like you only get one shot. My aim is to make songs we like and to make it something that we could look back on many years after and still be pleased with."
