Slamboree’s DJ incarnation gets ready to ignite Rainbow Serpent Festival.
Mike Freear and Kathika Rabbit aren't your average singer/ DJ duo. Hailing from the UK, the pair usually perform as part of the Slamboree: Pyro-Circus Dub Rave Massive alongside violinists, saxophone players, trumpeters and a bevy of circus performers. Slamboree Soundsystem may be a downsized version of the original ‘Rave Massive’, but their shows are no less raucous.
Where did the idea for a DJ offshoot of Slamboree come from?
The core of it is a collection of mates who’ve been living in Leeds and Manchester over the last few years. Many of us were supporting each other’s bands and events, and had a really cool collective emerging, so I just wanted to find a way of gluing it all together and taking it all on the road.
What can Australian audiences expect from a Slamboree Soundsystem set?
A mash-up DJ and vocal powerhouse mixing up all the styles that influence our band. We bounce around genres such glitchy breaks, dubstep, drum & bass, dub, techno and electro, sometimes throwing in cheeky with Balkan, folk, and 'gypsy' flavours. Kathika has been known to go on a bit of a rampage and start grabbing people out of the audience, so we'll try and keep her tame!
What are you most looking forward to about playing in Australia?
We've heard so much about this amazing festival [Rainbow Serpent] and are buzzing like a fridge to come and play for you all. The music scene is off the scale over there and you have no idea how excited we are to come across the pond.
Are you bringing any circus performers with you to Rainbow Serpent Festival?
We have a few tricks up our sleeves and have been making some great connections online thru friends in your area. You'll have to wait and see ;)
