With the recent release of their debut album, ‘My Own Mess’ and a run of (almost entirely) sold-out shows, it’s safe to say Skegss are having a great year.
When you’re being added to festivals all over the country (looking at you Laneway Festival and Mountain Sounds), you’re clearly doing something right.
Kicking off their mammoth weekend at The Metro Theatre (13 October), Skegss brought along Chicago’s Twin Peaks and Sydney’s SCABZ as supports.
It’s hard to agree with SCABZ when they scream: ‘We’re the sh.ttiest band in Sydney’, because honestly, they’re very far from it. Raucous, rough and unapologetic, SCABZ are just here for a bloody good time.
Even though they were playing to a smaller audience, these inner-west Sydneysiders really put on a show worth leaving your house for.
Whether you’ve been searching for the next big thing or just looking for a band that continues to embrace the humble Stubbies, then you should get your hands on a SCABZ record today. Just saying.
It’s not very often you witness a band that can hold your attention from the first riff. But then again, not every band are as captivating as Twin Peaks.
With such a hefty sound, the band’s vocals really suffered at the start; drowning under the wail of the guitars. Well, that was until they launched into ‘Making Breakfast’ and really ramped up their set.
If Twin Peaks didn’t win over the crowd with their feverish guitar playing, I’d say their brash stage presence definitely did. For a band that’s not particularly well known in the Australian scene, there was a very respectable amount of people in The Metro Theatre.
If you were too busy sinking tins to make it out to see Twin Peaks, then you should probably start reevaluating how you plan your Saturday evenings.
The Metro Theatre was absolutely heaving with people by the time Skegss took to the stage; from above you could see everyone scrambling to catch a piece of that coveted front rail, or maybe they just needed some air? Either way, this was a very eager crowd.
Not wasting any time, Skegss launched into their single, ‘Smogged Out’, sending the audience into a frenzy. While it goes without saying that the band are incredibly talented musicians, you’ve really got to give it to Benny Reed; the man knows how to write a song.
The band really started to ramp up their set when they took it back to their debut single, ‘L.S.D’. By this stage, the mosh was a sweaty, chaotic mess. I guess it’s hard not to get into the spirit of it all when the band are clearly having so much fun on stage.
Skegss are a band at the top of their game and if you have a chance to catch them on their ‘My Own Mess’ tour, you should absolutely do that. The tour continues till early November, with shows in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Fremantle and Perth.
