SIX60 Remain Humble By Staying True To Their Roots

SIX60
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and some beyond.

From humble beginnings in a Dunedin student flat to becoming New Zealand's highest-selling live band, SIX60's rise has been nothing short of remarkable.

Blending soul, rock, reggae and roots, they've created a sound that's instantly recognisable and has defined New Zealand summers for more than a decade.

Their live shows are a true celebration: Uplifting, powerful and unifying. Echoing the spirit of their hit 'Kia Mau Ki Tō Ūkaipō / Don't Forget Your Roots', every performance is a tribute to their beginnings and the deep connection they share with fans.

Set to play Kingston Butter Factory in Logan City in early November, SIX60 will be joined by South Summit. Known for their genre-defying blend of indie rock, reggae, and hip hop, the five piece has rapidly earned a reputation for their high-energy live shows, emotional depth, and impressive musicality.

This is more than a concert, it's a shared experience that only SIX60 can deliver.

You're performing a one-night-only show at Kingston Butter Factory (KBF) in Logan. What can fans expect from the energy and atmosphere of this particular performance?
SIX60: Our shows are about connection and celebration! You can expect a lot of singing; and we are excited to bring that energy to an area and a venue we have never played before.

Your music often reflects themes of heritage and belonging. What does it mean to bring those messages to a venue like KBF, which is deeply rooted in local cultural expression?
We have been lucky enough to be welcomed by the locals any time we come to Brisbane. Often receiving the blessing of a smoke ceremony pre-show; and we have included the culture in our performances. We plan on doing the same this time around. I have no doubt the spirits will be high come show time.

Your music blends Māori heritage, Pacific rhythms, and pop-rock. How do you navigate cultural fusion while staying authentic?
We are a band of cultural fusion. Different nations, races, upbringings. It's our superpower. Even individually, we are fusions of culture. The world itself is a fusion more than ever. It's something to be celebrated.

SIX60 were recently featured on two songs on Hilltop Hoods' new album; how did that collaboration come about and how were the sessions creating the two tracks? What are the Hoods lads like?
We have admired each other from a far for years.

We were stoked when the boys invited us out to Adelaide to write for their new album. We got on straight away; feeling like we have similar back stories and work ethic. We parked up at Matt's house [Suffa] for a couple days and the songs just fell out of us! I feel honoured to be singing on their record. I hope we can perform the songs live together this summer.

When can fans expect the next SIX60 album to arrive or new music in general (anything you can share with us about studio sessions)?
They can expect it very soon! We have the songs and in October we will be putting the final touches on it. The sessions have been a lot of fun and the music is magic. Can't wait to share it with the people. Keep an eye on socials for teases.

SIX60 is closing in on two decades of releasing music, touring the world etc; how has the journey been? What's been some of the highlights? And if you could give the band any advice back in 2008 what would it be?
It's been a crazy roller coaster! Travelling the world and making music with the people you love basically living the dream! What's crazy is I feel like we are only just getting started. Like we are finally just figuring this thing out.

There are so many highlights. Many I can't share 😂. Being the first to play New Zealand's national stadium at Eden Park to 50,000 fans was up there for sure. State Of Origin halftime show was dope. Buying the flat at 660 Castle St where we first started and providing free accommodation and a leg up for young students and artists has been amazing too.

Favourite thing about performing in Queensland?
The coast is amazing. The beaches. The culture. It's no wonder so many Kiwi are calling it home.

Backstage must-have?
Some speakers to play music, and a PlayStation. 'Rugby 08' or 'Undisputed Boxing'.

North Island or South Island?
North Island! Cos it's the best.

Lamingtons: Australia or New Zealand?
Lamingtons I give to Aussie, but the pav is ours!

Any concerns the Bledisloe Cup could end up coming 'home' to Australia this year?!
I am concerned. The Wallabies are looking really strong and confident. At least it might be competitive this year!

Thanks for your time; anything else you'd like to add?
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the show; and excited to share the new music.

SIX60 with South Summit play Kingston Butter Factory (Brisbane) on 2 November. They return to Australia to play Sydney Opera House on 11 December.
