Senior Writer.
A seasoned all-rounder music writer and storyteller with a specialised interest in the history of rock.

Brisbane singing sensation, Ellen Reed will make her Women In Voice debut in November when she joins the all-female vocal ensemble to celebrate their 25th anniversary.

It’s a significant milestone for Ellen, who just last year placed fourth in season five of 'The Voice Australia' under the guidance of her mentor Jessie J.

Now a full-time independent singer-songwriter, Ellen is about to step into the role of a lifetime. “I’m really honoured to be a part of [Women In Voice],” Ellen says.

“It’s something that I never imagined even happening. I’m so excited to be able to stand on stage with these women that have had such brilliant careers, and to make my debut at the 25th anniversary is so special. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Ellen will be brought into the ranks of Women In voice accompanied by long-time member Alison St Ledger as well as Pearly Black, Carita Farrer Spencer and MC Bridget Boyle.

“They are so talented and have had such amazing careers, so it’s nice to be in the same company as them and to learn from them,” Ellen says of her partners in song.

“Alison is so wonderful. I’ve worked with her a couple of times now and she’s always so loving and supportive of me and my career, and is always there to offer some advice when I have a question. The girls are excellent.”

For a quarter of a century Women In Voice has been an important platform for emerging artists to explore their craft, making it a valuable moment in Ellen’s own professional pathway. “I’m working so hard to make my singing into a lasting career,” she says.

“Some of those women have had the most amazing performance careers and to be able to sing alongside them is incredible.”

In the spirit of Women In Voice, for the anniversary performance Ellen will be stepping outside her comfort zone and presenting a different side of her on-stage persona. “I think audiences can expect something a little bit different,’ she says.

“I’m excited to be singing some of the songs that I’m singing and I think that it’s definitely a bit different to the normal stuff that I usually do.

“I’m going to be singing some ‘man’ songs that the narrative changes if a woman sings it, offering a different perspective on some really well-known songs from the past couple of years.”

Since her time on 'The Voice', Ellen has also become an advocate for promoting positive body image in the music industry. “There are too many bad role-models out there so I like to send a positive message about body image and to be able to support other women,” she says.

“I think as a society we tend to be in competition with other girls and we’re brought up to think that way. That’s why I love being part of Women In Voice as well; it’s a bunch of beautiful, talented, incredible women standing on stage together.

“There’s too much hate and bad crap in the world; we need to be more positive.”

The Women In Voice 25th anniversary shows take place at Brisbane Powerhouse 10-12 November.
