Sian Evans Is Enjoying The Solo Life

Sian Evans
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Since the release of her debut EP, Sian Evans has been busy circumnavigating the country finding herself in the middle of her ‘Take Me Home’ tour.

Last summer saw her nominated as a finalist in the Toyota Star Maker competition at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, and win ‘Best Video’ at the Queensland Music Design Awards for the EP’s title track, ‘Take Me Home’.

Juggling constant touring and motherhood has brought Sian to a crossroads. “I guess I'm at a point now where I'm questioning and considering. I'm always going to play music, but touring full-on like this, is probably not the way that I personally want to approach my music.

"I've been to all these places that I probably wouldn't have seen; music is the facilitating device that got me there … it’s been exciting but equally as exhausting.”

After her band The Rusty Datsuns disbanded, Sian decided to focus on her own pursuits. “After three years, I had really poured a lot into that act and I ultimately was reaping a third of what we were getting back. So I thought, if I'm going to put as much work into something, it's probably time that I put that work in myself.”

On the prospect of releasing another EP or even an album, Sian says finances are the deal-breaker. “I've pretty much decided that, as I'm about to turn 30, I don't want to keep funnelling all of my money into music … If I do a single, it means I can do it really well, and work off that platform and milk it to its full potential. Because once you drop that record, you've got one opportunity to really push it.”

With more original material in the pipeline, Sian is searching for new challenges. “I want to work with different producers. I'm just keeping my eyes and ears out for people that might want to work with me and create something that is my sound, with the influence of somebody else's flavour.”
