Sia has performed her smash hit single 'Chandelier' live on Ellen — with her back to the audience.
Sia smashed the vocal performance as did 11-year-old dancer Maddy Ziegler who accompanied the chanteuse on set with an energetic interpretation of the song which has already amassed 10 million + views on Youtube.
Explanation for the at-first unexplained and bizarre decision to not face the camera or audience is offered with Sia's interview with Billboard last year. She explained her decision to step away from the limelight was borne out of a need to protect her mental health: for years she battled an addiction to painkillers and alcoholism while struggling to cope with the pressures of public life. She appeared on that magazine’s cover with a paper bag over her head.
“All I wanted to do was write for pop stars. For one reason or another it never happened for me. Then I got seriously addicted to Vicodin and Oxycodone, and I was always a drinker but I didn’t know I was an alcoholic. I was really unhappy being an artist and I was getting sicker and sicker.”
Now, with a successful day job as a pop songwriter-for-hire for the likes of Britney Spears, Beyonce and Rihanna, Sia says she’s virtually retired as a pop star herself.
“I get to sit at home with the dogs on the sofa, record in a closet in the office, send them off and, if I’m lucky, make a million dollars,” she says.
