Seven years is a long time (it's an eternity in the music world), but that's how long it'll have been when Australian punk-rock band Short Stack release their new studio album next February.
Titled 'Maybe There's No Heaven', the ten-track release already features the singles 'Live4' and 'Burn You Down', with new cut 'Love You Like I Used To' released today. After signing with UNFD in March after a six-year hiatus, Short Stack are back with a heavier sound that's sure to appease old fans as well as garnering new listeners.
"There was a tension between the band that we wanted to be and the band that other people around us wanted to be," Short Stack vocalist Shaun Diviney says of the band's past.
Drummer Bradie Webb declares this time around feels like the group "finally have our hands on the steering wheel".
Around 2009-2011, it's fair to say Short Stack were one of the biggest bands in Australia. Their brand of pop-punk also made them one of the most loathed groups in the land.
Completed by bassist Andy Clemmensen, over a decade on from their rise to stardom, the trio are reflecting on their fascinating journey – warts and all – on 'Maybe There's No Heaven'.
"I can't pretend that it didn't bring me down," Andy says of the band's burst to success fraught with the rise of online hate, death wishes, judgement and losing their masters to manipulative powers in the music industry.
"It's definitely given us a thick skin, but it's also made us put up our barriers. . . it feels like there's still a massive stigma attached to us.
"I feel like if listeners really dug deep and got to the roots of us, they'd see we're just three guys from a small town who loved playing music and worked hard to get in the position we were."
Seven years is an eternity in the music world to wait for another album; the band admit a big part of pushing on were their fans.
"As much as we were writing the album that we 100 per cent wanted to write, we were also writing for those fans that have been there for us. . . they're the only reason that we get to do this," Shaun says.
"We didn't think we'd have the opportunity to do this again and we are just super grateful that we can."
'Maybe There's No Heaven' will be released 25 February, 2022. Pre-order it.
