Hailmary won’t have you showering in holy water or preaching from the scriptures, but they’ll have you on your feet during their upcoming tour.
For our readers who haven’t had a chance to listen to ‘Navigate The Sunrise’, how would you describe your EP? Big riffs and plenty of melody. If you like riff-based hard rock you will dig listening to this record. From the feedback we have received so far people have said it grows with every listen.
How did you go about recording it? We took a punt and decided to produce and engineer this one on our own. Our drummer Vas has a nice little studio in hills of Western Australia called ‘Vasectomy Studio’ that we used to track the record.
Has your style morphed with ‘Navigate...’? I think the songs are stronger than our debut album CPCS (‘Choice Path Consequence Solution’), but that's my opinion. It's always going to be compared to something else, but I think as a release it sounds like Hailmary.
What can punters expect from the national tour? A sweaty, high energy rock show. We have been in the rehearsal room rehearsing the new stuff for a while now, so we are ready to get out there and smash them out.
You guys have a reputation for strong and energetic performances, what do you do to prepare for your shows? [We’ve] got a little move from Jack Black called the ‘cock pushup’, one of them and your good to go haha! Usually just a couple of stretches and a whiskey and it’s showtime.
What has been the most memorable tour memory for Hailmary? Probably our second time in Melbourne playing the inaugural Rock N Load festival. The night before we played Amplifier Bar in Perth [and] then pretty much went to the airport, off the plane and to the venue to play that show at 5pm with little sleep and with the three hour time difference it ended up being two shows in two states in 24 hours! Both were killer shows.
What else are you working on right now? When we come back from tour we have a few ideas kicking around, so we will probably get in the studio and work on them; we are [also] looking at getting to Europe in the near future.
What does the average day when you're on tour look like? Just rushing around really. People on the outside have this illusion that it's all parting and it’s like a holiday. It’s a lot of driving, dodgy sausage rolls at service stations and snoring band members :) Ahhhhh living the life! But in all seriousness, it’s a lot of fun and getting to go onstage for that hour makes it all worth it.
Where do you see yourselves in five years? To continue doing what we are doing, and that's to play to new crowds, new countries and have a blast doing so!
