Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

English born and Australian-made musician, Sarah King is set to release her debut EP.

Classically trained, Sarah is an emerging Adelaide artist who recently launched lead single ‘Back Home’ in the lead-up to her EP release. “It’s wonderful that it’s out there, it’s really amazing,” Sarah says.

Delivering an intimate collection of arrangements, ‘Back Home’ combines an array of genres such as pop, jazz and folk with a hint of classical.

Sarah began writing ‘Back Home’ after her move to South Australia four years ago. “I was settling myself and my family into SA, our new home state. I started exploring themes of home and what home means to different people, whether it’s a place, a person or something completely unique.

“It’s a song about what and where home can be; a story of longing, reminiscing, reflection, acceptance and gratitude.”

Excited and thrilled, Sarah can’t wait to showcase her EP. “At the launch we will have a full band and string quartet, which will be really special.”

1970s pop and Motown inspired, Sarah’s EP is dream-like and relaxed, filled with soaring melodies and transfixing harmonies. Over a three-day period, Sarah recorded her EP at Wizard Tone Studios. With a flare for all instruments, Sarah did most of the recording herself.

She also had help from local SA musicians including Adam Page, James Brown, Kyrie Anderson, Hilary Kleinig and Lizzie Gregory. “It was really awesome, they were really receptive and supportive. It felt really comfortable and they were easy to work with.”

From a young age Sarah was surrounded by music; it wasn’t long until she grew a fond appreciation for it. Classically trained as a violinist, Sarah has travelled all over Australia to perform. “Music is my life, it’s all I do professionally.”

In July, Sarah performed at Catherine House as part of Umbrella Winter City Sounds to help raise awareness for women experiencing homelessness. Catherine House, provides supported accommodation for women.

Sarah hopes that her music connects with those women in need. “I want my music to give women who are homeless strength and understanding. I think we live in a world with a lot of expectations."

With a bright future ahead of her, Sarah is already planning her next moves. “The plan is to volunteer [at Catherine House], bring out a music video for ‘Back Home’ and to continue to raise awareness for women who are homelessness.”

Sarah showcases debut EP at The Wheatsheaf Hotel (Adelaide) Sunday 27 August.
