San Cisco @ The Triffid Review

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

On a crisp, Saturday night (16 May), San Cisco warmed Brisbane hearts as they again graced us with their presence at The Triffid as part of the 'Graceland' album tour.

Scarlett Stevens (drums, vocals) was throwing smiles into the crowd all night, with an amused expression falling upon her face every now and then. I’m not sure if I was missing something in the crowd, but it was nice to see her get into it, even though she was situated a little to far away for my liking.

When Scarlett came out from behind the drums to partake in a ‘slow jam’ between her and Jordi (guitar, lead vocals) it was almost a fan's dream come true. Parts of the song have this almost quick call and response feel to it, so the chemistry between them both was electric. It almost transcended concert into performance art, but I think everyone was having too much fun to take it too seriously.

Nick (bass, synth) and Josh (guitar, vocals, synth) were as pleasant as always, almost performing in their own, little world. They have a more subtle chemistry as well, playing on each other's shy or cheeky nature.

Not only did San Cisco play their new songs, they also performed their popular songs like ‘Awkward’ and ‘Beach’ from their first album ‘San Cisco’. The mixture of slow to fast songs was perfected, never making the crowd feel to relaxed or too hyper. It was a warm room, but it felt like we earned that sweat.

As usual there was the encore tradition to uphold, but Jordi came back first by himself to perform an acoustic rendition of ‘Skool' from their latest album and, as the band came back one by one, built up a crescendo during crowd favourite ‘Fred Astaire’. There was call and response and the crowd got really into it.

San Cisco will always be a good time whether you are a fan or not, because no one can resist the charm of this brightly-coloured band all the way from Fremantle.
