San Cisco Expose Their ‘Flaws’ With New Music

San Cisco release their new EP 'Flaws' on 27 March, 2020.

Fremantle indie-pop favourites, San Cisco foreshadow the arrival of their new album later in the year with the release of their 'Flaws' EP in March.

“It's not totally separate to the album, it's more just a taste of what's going to be on the album,” frontman Jordi Davieson explains about the EP.

“It's got two songs on it that we've already released, 'Skin' and 'Reasons', and then it's going to have some B-side tracks.”

As for the album proper, Jordi says he and the band have undertaken a different writing process to that of their previous album, 2017's 'The Water', opting instead to spend more time crafting the songs.

“With this record, we've been writing it for quite a while, like a couple of years, and the record before that 'The Water', we got into the studio and as we were writing it we were [also] recording it,” he says.

“So it was a much more shooting-from-the-hip, high-energy approach whereas a lot of the songs off this next record were written in our living room just on guitars while figuring out lyrics and melodies, and then taking them into the studio once they were quite refined songs to work on them further, putting all the bells and whistles on them and turning them into pop songs.”

Jordi applied the same process to constructing the lyrics, allowing himself sufficient space and time to work at his own pace. “For me, with the lyrics, I'm not very good at jumping in a studio and writing the lyrics,” he admits.

“They just sort of come to me and they're the good ones. I'll write a song, then it'll be a month and I won't write anything and then I'll write two good songs, instead of getting in a studio and trying to write ten good songs in three months.”

Of course, with new music comes touring and live shows; San Cisco will be performing as part of Groovin The Moo and hitting the road for their own shows in May before jetting off to the States and UK for a tour in support of the EP.

“The other thing we've been putting a lot of work into is our live show, trying to take it up a notch for this tour,” Jordi says.

“It's going to be great. Groovin The Moo, I think, was the first touring festival we'd ever been on and they've always been like family to us, so it's going to be great to be back on it.”

Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, Jordi says there's plenty on the books for San Cisco as they ramp up to releasing the album (as yet untitled) and bolstering their live presence.

“There's going to be releasing the record later in the year and there will be more touring around that; hopefully we get a few more festival slots,” he says.

“So we're going to be playing shows, hopefully playing some of the bigger shows we've played to-date. I'd like to see these songs and this record do the best we've done because I think it's the best work that we've done.”

'Flaws' EP is out 27 March.
