Sahara Beck is young, vibrant and excited to share her music with the world.
Having moved to Brisbane when she was 15, she has released two EPs – both before her 20th birthday – which is a testament to how dedicated she is to pursuing her craft. “I've always wanted to sing. I have been watching these home videos [recently] from when I was three and there is heaps of footage of me just sitting in front of the Christmas Tree making up songs for the family and acting. I have always wanted to perform and do my own thing.”
The next step is recording and releasing an album. “I have spent just over a year on this next album and I have put everything into it. It's exactly the way that I feel. I want it to feel like people put their headphones on and they own my headspace for an hour or however long it goes for,” Sahara says.
Her mesmerising voice shines through on her EP 'Bloom', which is packed full of emotion and personality. “If I sing the way it comes out without trying to edit myself, then that is how you can find your own sound and then no one can say anything because it is your own sound.
"I don't want people to get hung up on whether my voice sounds clear enough or dramatic enough. I just want people to get sucked into the song because that is what it is about. It is about the music and how it makes you feel.”
When approaching her music, Sahara leans on her emotions for inspiration. “With the recordings I guess I hear the songs in my head and I try to bring that feeling I have across to people through the song. That is a really powerful thing I think, especially with performing.
"A big thing that I have noticed and been aware of is while you are performing it is so important to be present and to not think about before or after but to be right there with the audience, and then you can snap everybody else out of their sleep,” Sahara says.
Sahara Beck plays The Helm at The Wharf Tavern on 12 February. Sahara also performs as part of 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars' at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of MELT Festival on 6, 9 February.
