By far one of the most engaging, entertaining and visually appealing concerts I have been to in awhile.
Nothing was held back as the immensely talented trio started their act strong showing no signs of slowing down. The unique indie-tronica sounds and harrowing vocals of lead singer Ben Woolner filled the Thebarton Theatre (22 October), with the set opened by 'My Love Is Gone' and ‘Together, Locked Safely’.
The visual backdrop was mesmerising; each and every effect tied into each song's hidden message; jumping between tessellating shapes and silhouettes, manipulating the crowds’ emotions and movement. Their hit single ‘Counting Sheep’, which featured in the 2015 Triple J Hottest 100 was extremely well received.
The addition of distorted vocals added another level of intrigue to the already flawless, vocal performance, as demonstrated in fan favourite ‘You Are The One’. Woolner, hit all the high notes with spine tingling results. “So, a couple of weeks ago we put out a record, and it just happened to be our first one, so if it’s ok with you, we might play a bunch of songs from that!?” Woolner said to the crowd. And no one was going to argue with that; they jumped into ‘Fake It Til The Sunrise’, ‘Over You’ and ‘Make Them Wheels Roll’.
To be perfectly honest, every single part of SAFIA's show was unbelievable. There is just something about these three boys that is undeniably new, fun and incredibly exciting. So basically, if you weren’t there you missed out. And you should definitely run out and buy their new album ‘Internal’; I know I will.
