Royal Blood Bring The Punk-Funk-DIY Vibes On New Album 'Typhoons'

Royal Blood
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Ratatat-sounding and with their Daft Punk, Justice influences oozing unbridled everywhere, Royal Blood have dropped the mega-tasty title track from their forthcoming third studio album, 'Typhoons'.

The pairing of Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher highlighted a subtle change to the sound of Royal Blood – who already have two UK #1 albums to their name – last year, when they released the devilishly seductive 'Trouble's Coming'.

Now 'Typhoons' bursts forth with the group's trademark crunchy riffs and pulsating drum rhythms aided by Kerr and Thatcher's return to their roots with a back-to-basics approach to making music.

"We sort of stumbled on this sound, and it was immediately fun to play," recalls Kerr. "That's what sparked the creativity on the new album, the chasing of that feeling.

"It's weird, though – if you think back to 'Figure It Out', it kind of contains the embryo of this album.

"We realised that we didn't have to completely destroy what we'd created so far; we just had to shift it, change it. On paper, it's a small reinvention. But when you hear it, it sounds so fresh."

'Typhoons' is released on 30 April. Pre-order it.
