Shoegaze legends Ride are headed back to Australia this winter and they're bringing psych-pop rockers Mercury Rev with them.
Now ten years deep into their second era after their 2014 reformation, and just two years removed from their last Australian visit (for the 30-year anniversary tour of their debut album 'Nowhere'), Ride will headline concerts in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth this August. The 'Vapour Trail', 'Leave Them All Behind' and 'Future Love' hitmakers recently released their seventh studio album, 'Interplay', their first record since 2019's 'This Is Not A Safe Place'.
Across 12 tracks including 3 singles – 'Peace Sign', 'Last Frontier' and 'Monaco' – 'Interplay' connects all the dots from their career, taking the frenzied guitar attacks, hypnotic grooves and dreamy melodic hooks of their early work and setting it to a more expansive sonic template (psychedelic folk and electronic music) inspired by '80s pop gems like Tears For Fears, Talk Talk and early U2.
Stalwarts of the indie psych scene for three-plus decades, Mercury Rev – led by Jonathan Donahue and Sean 'Grasshopper' Mackowiak – have released 11 studio albums, enjoying their most productive phase in the late '90s to mid 2000s.
They released three successive albums – 1998's 'Deserter's Songs', 2001's 'All Is Dream' and 2005's 'The Secret Migration' – that cemented their status as underground stars whose sound has undeniably impacted the next gen of psych-pop bands.
Mercury Rev's most recent record was 2019's 'Bobby Gentry's The Delta Sweete Revisited', a reworking of Bobbie Gentry’s seminal album, 'The Delta Sweete'. It features collaborations with the likes of Norah Jones, Phoebe Bridgers, Beth Orton and Margo Price.
Tickets on sale from 9am (local time) on 17 May.
