The Fray returned to Melbourne for the 20th anniversary of their most iconic album, 'How To Save A Life', selling out the Forum Theatre with a warmth and nostalgia that only a band of their ilk can create.

From the moment the doors opened (7 December), it was clear it was going to be a special night. The crowd was a beautiful mix of generations. Fans in their mid to late 40s who grew up with the band, and younger listeners who discovered their music years later.

Even before the band stepped onstage, the atmosphere felt sentimental. A single lightbulb hung from the ceiling, glowing softly in the centre. It was a powerful addition to signify their early era and instantly set the tone for a night that celebrated where it all began.

As the venue lights dimmed and the first notes rang out, the room erupted in excitement. Their set list was everything from newer singles to the older hits fans were hoping for.

Classics like 'How To Save A Life', 'You Found Me' and encore closer 'Never Say Never' were met with loud sing-alongs and excited screams, each lyric echoing with the kind of emotion that only decades of connection and dedication can build.

Nostalgia spread through every corner of the theatre, you could feel it in the way the audience were waving their hands in the air, and the way people looked at their friends when their favourite songs were performed.

The band introduced their newest single, 'Song's I'd Rather Not Sing', during the encore, a song that somehow felt familiar on first listen. The performance felt deeply personal, and the blend of piano melodies with beautiful vocals carried the same emotion as their earlier work.

Even after 20 years, The Fray still know exactly how to make a crowd truly feel the music. Vocalist Joe King was extraordinary. His voice was more powerful than I expected, effortlessly echoing thoroughly the room.

What made the show truly unforgettable were the moments of genuine connection with the crowd. At one point, Joe jumped off the stage and made his way through the mosh pit, weaving his way to the back of the Forum. Fans lit up with excitement as he sang among them, a rare intimate moment that couldn't happen anywhere but a venue like this.

The Forum proved to be the perfect Melbourne home for this tour. Its charm and history created an atmosphere that felt deeply personal. The Fray made the theatre feel like a bedroom filled with stories, memories, and music that shaped so many people's lives.

As the final notes of 'Never Say Never' lingered, The Fray didn't just perform, they revisited a chapter of people's lives, and reminded Melbourne why their music has stayed timeless for 20 years.
