Morgan Evans made a triumphant return to Australia, launching the regional leg of his 'Life Upside Down' tour at Gold Coast's HOTA (2 April).
Newcastle-born artist Austin Mackay captured hearts from the moment he stepped onto the stage. Fresh from a mesmerising tour alongside Brad Cox, Austin exuded raw emotion and boundless energy.Accompanied by pianist Jason Daniels and a loop pedal, Austin delivered an intimate performance that resonated deeply with the audience. Within mere moments, he endeared himself to a room full of newfound admirers, particularly with his third song, a heartfelt ode to his father titled 'Real Life'.
Beginning with a poignant reflection on his father's influence, Austin shared: "If I can be half the man that my dad is one day, I'll be content. If I can give my kids half the life he gave me, then I'll be so damn happy."
As he held the room captive, Austin imparted words of wisdom to his listeners. "To each and every one of you out there tonight who feel like you're working your life away one way or another, please remember, there is always more to life than just making money and going to work, paying off a mortgage. We are only here once, we only live this life once, do what makes you happy with the people that love you."
As Austin's set came to an end, the crowd erupted into enthusiastic applause and rose to their feet, a clear testament to the lasting impression of his performance. After the show, numerous new fans eagerly lingered to meet him, showcasing the profound impact he had made on them.
With an electrifying atmosphere crackling in the air, the stage was set for Morgan Evans to ignite the night with his unparalleled energy and captivating melodies.
Kicking off his set joking with the crowd, he stated: "Well, it may be a Tuesday, and this room feels a bit like a TED talk, but there are certainly no rules against having a good time tonight."
True to Morgan Evans' signature style, the evening continued with the appearance of Kita Alexander as the first guest onstage, treating the audience to their collaborative track 'Date Night'.
Morgan delighted the crowd with tantalising tidbits about his forthcoming live album, which was recorded at the Sydney Opera House during the initial phase of his tour last year. Among the album's offerings are beloved classics alongside a highly anticipated new track, which received an enthusiastic reception from fans during last night's performance.
Additionally, Evans teased an accompanying music video promising glimpses into his life on the road. Playing his unreleased tongue-in-cheek track 'Say What You Want', Evans' emotive prowess evoked fervent reactions from the audience and left no doubt fans are eagerly anticipating its release.
Kita Alexander wasn't the sole artist to step onto the stage; special guest Pete Murray also joined Morgan, lending his vocals to a rendition of his own original song, 'Opportunity'. With a playful quip, Pete remarked: "Well, at least I know this one."
No Morgan Evans concert would be complete without the tender, intimate renditions of 'Over For You' and 'Things That We Drink To' played on the piano. Paying homage to his late manager and dear friend Rob Potts, whom he lost a few years back, Morgan dedicated these songs not only to Rob but also to anyone in the audience who was missing a loved one they had lost.
Injecting fresh energy into the atmosphere, Morgan dedicated 'Hey Little Mama' to those who attended their first concert last night, many of whom had had the pleasure of meeting him beforehand.
Finishing his set with an encore and much-loved song 'On My Own Again', Morgan's performance was undoubtedly a blend of heartfelt tributes, infectious energy, and soul-stirring melodies, leaving the audience thoroughly captivated.
