Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The Princess Theatre became a disco for the night as everyone, dressed in black, swayed to Molchat Doma last Thursday (15 June) as part of the venue's Open Season programme.

It began with the supports who were successful in getting everyone excited for the main act; which was good as the theatre was already quite full by the first act.

Both solo acts – Vanessa Worm and Buzz Kull – were highly confident, with solid beats and infectious, dark moods. Buzz Kull went overtime and was informed by crew. This was a rookie error, but it also highlighted how 'in the zone' everyone was.

Molchat Doma hail all the way from Minsk, Belarus. They brought with them '80s-style darkwave synthpop, reminiscent of old Soviet artists like Kino.

However, there is cultural overlap; this interesting perspective, far different to Australia's, created a very familiar, but fresh sound.

As cheers erupted as Molchat Doma walked onstage, the set had a much higher energy than I anticipated. My expectations were a shoegazey experience; but what I found was colourful flashing lights, energetic movement and equally energetic dancing.

Molchat Doma's high energy was heavily varied to give nice highs and lows between songs to keep us engaged.

Molchat Doma had my full attention for the entire set. This may not sound impressive, but to hold one's attention for an entire hour and a half is a true accomplishment. It requires utmost musicianship, performance skills and a well-rounded crew and thoughtout set.

Speaking of their crew, shoutout to the sound and lights from Molchat's touring team. Each song was curated with complicated patches and timing. Their specifically aimed spotlights showcasing a synth solo or two really added to the experience.

The musicianship of Molchat Doma was incredibly impressive. I found myself constantly in bliss made by the bass tone, guitar and synth play and tightness of the band. Songs felt nostalgic but still had a modern flare.

Спасибо (thank you) Molchat Doma. What a memorable experience.
