Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The anticipated return of Maribou State exceeded expectations at The Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane last night (27 February).

Maribou State's studio recordings of their softer electronic pieces create a comfortable space; their live set was an authentic replication. This allowed for seamless sing- and dance-alongs to the songs fans know (something the crowd took full advantage of).

Their rich tapestry of audio delight fills you with positivity and having the touring band's live instruments onstage, made it an extra lively retelling of the tracks. Credit must be given to the tight teamwork and craftsmanship required to make such replication and tone happen.

Additionally, praise must be given to singer Talulah Ruby. She added another level to the experience. She spun and glided across the stage, her vocal style and tone perfectly suited the music, while her presence and energy flawlessly enveloped the space. It was very welcoming.

In the final third of the set, the lights began to strobe, and we got deeper. We returned to the instrumental pieces with 'Rituals'. Guitar repeated itself with delay, echoing through the hall. The choice of vocal samples added an angelic echo. Fuzzy synths and percussion/ drum heartbeat kept it all tied together. Dare I say, it began to have a psychedelic tone. A particularly favourite moment of mine.

'Rituals' transitioned without pause into 'Midas' as Talulah returned to the stage as the crowd erupted in anticipation for her sweet call. Everyone swayed to the beat as Ruby added her own flare to the live version. She hit incredibly beautiful, strong vocal licks that made the crowd, and myself, lose our minds in awe!

Once it was over, the hall did not fall silence, rather a deafening "ONE MORE SONG! ONE MORE SONG!" descended on the stage. Maribou State returned to applause and closed out with 'Blackoak'. An extremely satisfying encore.

The jolly bass and beat bopped alongside us. The fuzzy guitar was a warm hug goodbye. The crowd screamed, the whole band took a bow, and we all went home with hearts filled.
