As the lights rose, casting cones of colour around the stage, and the music echoed through the Forum Melbourne, the kinetic energy in the crowd was palpable (5 April).

Grace Shaw – better known as Mallrat – twirled onto the stage and immediately took command, delivering what could only be described as the performance of her life.

Following the release of her album 'Light Hit My Face Like A Straight Right', and after a string of national arena dates opening for pop royalty Kylie Minogue, Mallrat's arrival felt like an explosion. The moment her set began, the energy hit the audience like a straight right: Intense, unrelenting, and completely electrifying.

Before Mallrat took the stage, three opening acts – Daine, Denim, and Prophecy Girl – each brought their own flavour of kinetic energy. Their dance-pop sets amplified the crowd's excitement, building the perfect atmosphere for what was to come.

The infectious energy they brought left everyone eagerly anticipating Mallrat's performance, and by the time she appeared, the audience was absolutely primed for the show ahead.

Grace's performance embodied her name – no pun intended – effortlessly moving around the stage with a fluidity that matched every beat of the songs. Her graceful, almost ethereal movements added an extra layer of magic to the show.

There was something captivating in the way she danced, and it made her presence even more mesmerising. It was clear she's not just a musician, but a true artist with a deep understanding of stage performance.

The lighting throughout the show played a crucial role in enhancing the electric atmosphere. The dynamic lights followed the themes of her album, casting vibrant colours that seemed to move in time with her performance.

At times, Mallrat appeared almost angelic, her every movement enhanced by the stunning visuals. The lights didn't just illuminate the stage – they transformed the performance, making Mallrat feel untouchable and almost otherworldly.

Grace's connection with the crowd was one of the highlights of the show. Between songs, she took time to express her gratitude for the fans who had been with her since she was 16, sharing how much their support meant to her.

The audience responded with equal excitement, singing along and showing their appreciation for the artist who had grown alongside them. The energy between Mallrat and the crowd felt incredibly special – this wasn't just a performance; it was a shared experience, built on years of mutual respect.

Mallrat's ability to balance incredible stage presence with genuine crowd interaction was a testament to her talent. She was able to seamlessly connect with the audience while still commanding the stage with confidence and grace. This human connection made the performance even more impactful, creating a deeper bond with the music and the moment.

By the end of the night, it was clear: Mallrat is not just an artist, but a force to be reckoned with. She's a master of both her craft and the stage, with an undeniable connection to her fans. This show was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of Mallrat's journey and her incredible growth as a performer.
