It's been a hot minute since Sydney-based trio Art vs Science aka Jim Finn, Dan McNamee and Dan Williams found themselves in Fremantle; and they certainly delivered on their return on Saturday night (3 December) at Freo.Social.
The trio first formed 15 years ago, and their new album 'Big Overdrive' offers 15 playful tracks that dive into a range of genres and creative soundscapes.Local talents Project Bexx and Pot Plant House Party each warmed up the crowd with high-energy performances delivered through wicked outfits, visuals, and punchy house party vibes.
By the time Art vs Science hit the stage around 10:30pm, the hall was packed with fans ready to belt out lyrics to old and new dance-floor fillers.
You hear the word 'experimental' thrown around a lot when it comes to Art vs Science, and seeing them live gave me a whole new appreciation for the craft that goes into their music.
They dived into the set with the new album's self-titled single 'Big Overdrive', bringing the sexy electric guitar riffs, juicy synth beats, and deep drums they've gained international recognition for.
'Big Overdrive' album tracks 'SWEAT' and 'How 2 Stay High' went off, bringing a fusion of funk, house, techno, and dance-pop to a very sweaty and excited audience.
The confidence and ease with which they performed across various instruments was mesmerising. After years of bringing audiences live shows they had a natural synchronicity and flow when performing together.
'I Saw You' was another standout tune from 'Bog Overdrive', with a head-banging drum section and beautiful vocals to match the ambient stage lighting.
I lost my mind halfway through the set when they played my personal favourite banger, 'Magic Fountain'. It was a full-circle moment after falling in love with the studio recording version in 2010 to hear it performed even more deliciously live.
The guitar solo to 'Parlez Vous Francais' was nothing short of epic; the raw talent from Dan Mac on guitar could have lengthened the song late into the night and kept the crowd hanging on for more.
They finished the set with 'Create/Destroy', delivered with the same electric energy the show started with. It was an absolute treat to have the trio back in town.
Make sure to show some love to their music videos for 'Check The Boombox' and 'SWEAT'. If you're into medieval knights, retro gym vibes, and mad science, these videos are for you.
