Regurgitator

Regurgitator's Jukeboxxin' tour sounds like a neat idea on paper: a run of shows built around the band's singles catalogue.

In reality, it's turned into something much bigger – and much longer – than anyone expected.

"It's literally the longest show we've ever played," co-frontman Quan Yeomans says, still sounding a little incredulous. "Almost two hours with no interval. It's nuts."

Even he's surprised fans are sticking around for it. "I'm amazed," he laughs. "They still kind of stand there for the whole thing."

With more than 30 years under their belt and, as Yeomans puts it, "like, 54 singles or something ridiculous", the band had to draw a line somewhere when crafting the Jukeboxxin' set list.

"There's no way we could do all of them," he says. "So we just picked the ones we didn't hate, essentially."

That blunt approach has brought a few forgotten songs back into the spotlight. Tracks like 'Happiness' and 'Superstraight', which hadn't been played live in years, have slid comfortably back into the set, helped along by the addition of second guitarist and keys player Sarah Lim.

"With the second guitarist, you can get more of the intricate parts happening," Yeomans explains. "Some of those songs were actually a nice surprise. They work really well."

Despite the show clocking in at around an hour and 50 minutes, Yeomans admits it hasn't been as physically brutal as he feared – even though he didn't exactly train for it.

"I said I'd prepare myself and didn't get 'round to it," he laughs. "So I'm just preparing myself as we go."

Part of that comes down to pacing. Unlike a short, all-guns-blazing festival set, Jukeboxxin' moves around. "It goes from high hectic to quite mellow," he says. "So it's not as tiring as I thought."

Revisiting songs written decades ago comes with its own strange mental disconnect. For Yeomans, the dissonance is real.

"You don't really feel like the person who wrote those songs anymore," he says. "It feels like you're covering someone else's music. You're a cover band of your own band."

Some tracks had been avoided in the past for emotional reasons – "songs about ex-girlfriends and stuff like that" – but they've slipped back into the set without much fanfare.

As for whether there are any B-sides he thinks deserved better treatment, he doesn't hesitate. "No," he says. "They're pretty bad."

Looking back at Regurgitator's early material, Yeomans is honest about what's changed. While later records leaned further into commercial pop structures, he misses the reckless weirdness of the band's beginnings.

"When you first start out, you don't give a f...," he says. "There's tension, chaos, and that makes you do weirder stuff."

That chaos, though, isn't something he's keen to relive on tour. "Most bands implode because of that," he says. "It's interesting in the studio, but it's a pain in the ass on the road."

Longevity, he reckons, comes from learning how to get along – something Lim has slotted into seamlessly. "She's got incredible stage presence," Yeomans says.

"She brings this extra energy. She's fun to tour with, fun to hang out with – it just lifts everything."

The Jukeboxxin' shows have also highlighted just how broad Regurgitator's audience has become. Yeomans regularly spots multiple generations in the room.

"Younger fans aren't nostalgic," he says. "They're hearing the songs for the first time. That's really cool to see."

For Yeomans, that mix of discovery and memory is what keeps it worthwhile. "The world's pretty crazy," he says. "Humour is how you survive it. That's always been the point."
