Surf-rock band Radolescent last week released their debut album, ‘Prehab’; now they're about to hit the road to celebrate, playing a number of east-coast shows as well as Adelaide.
The lead single for the new album is 'Tuck Me In', a song about the unpleasant side effects of partying a little too hard. “For my 21st, we went to Falls Festival and I got completely written off over three days,” says the band's frontman Isaac with a laugh.
“When we got back to the [Gold] Coast, I spent five days in a dark room so that was the inspiration of that song.
“When we first jammed it in the shed, we were all kinda like ‘this isn’t really a Radolescent song’ because it was too happy and too ‘soft’ I guess, and then we came up with the idea of writing something quite dark and morbid to chuck over it. So when people listen to the lyrics they’ll be like, ‘oh hang on, this is pretty gnarly'.”
When they haven't been partying, the boys have been hard at work on their debut album, 'Prehab', spending 15 hours a day in the studio. Their day jobs keep them busy as well, but the tight schedule hasn't stopped them from having a good time.
“We're raging. Pretty much when we're not playing gigs or practising we either go surfing or honestly we are just piss heads. We just party... all the time.”
Since releasing their four-track debut EP, 'Scrape Ya Plate', in 2017 the band have continued to develop their own DIY surf-rock/ punk vibe. “I think the [band's] sound has definitely changed a bit.
“As we're getting a bit older everything is just maturing a bit more, which is good and I think hopefully by the next album we'll be right where we want to be.
“Bands like Violent Soho; when you put their albums on it sounds so full and meaty, that's kinda what we're going for. We want the stuff that you put on to get pumped up and get out there.”
This tour will be their first time headlining, taking the band a step out of their comfort zone. But after they played the support act for Aussie skate punkers C.O.F.F.I.N, Isaac is confident they can handle the headliner status.
“The biggest thing I've learnt is you can sleep anywhere if you drink enough; C.O.F.F.I.N taught me that. Before that tour, I'm gonna go ahead and say we were pretty soft. We liked to think that we were punks, but those guys were a whole new-level of hardcore punks.
“I’m very excited to hit the road. I love going to other cities and playing in new places, but I’m also nervous because it’s our first time headlining. It’s all about us this time. It’ll be a step up, but I’m super pumped and can’t wait.”
Radolescent aren’t stopping there though, with plans for more music and shows later in the year. “After this tour, we’re planning on getting back in the studio and recording two singles.
“We’ve got two really good shows towards the end of the year, that’s really all we’re doing. The second half of the year we’ll be looking to jam more and write heaps of new stuff.”
