Radio Birdman @ The Hi-Fi [BNE] Review

Radio Birdman
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

“Yeah! Yeah, Hup” was the catch-cry for little-old Brisbane on Friday night as rock & roll royalty hit town in the form of Radio Birdman.

All the rock and rollers were out in force tonight, which started off at the Boundary for a couple of frosty ones surrounded by a sea of black and the showing off of Birdman tatts.

The Hi-Fi beckons me for the support acts to tonight’s extravaganza; I'm to late for Mick Medew and The Rumours who I'm told slammed one out of the park.

The home-town heroes being Hits are the next to hit the stage and the place is buzzing in anticipation, and the crowd are not disappointed as they slam into tracks off their latest album, ‘Hikikomori’. Evil Dick prowls the stage as we're pummelled by Andy B and relief drummer Booges’ pounding rhythms. The package is completed by the shredding sisters of rock – Tamara and Stacey – who have the crowd fully engaged and begging for more.

You're never alone with a Smith and Wesson baby, but keeping me company from the outset is the sweet sounds of Deniz Tek, who from the outset has me reminiscing about days gone-by, of misspent youth and slamming around the house to Birdman.

They may be old, but can still rock with the best of them as Rob Younger has the massive crowd drowning in sweat, hanging off his every word and gesture. I've never seen the place this packed as the air is sucked from the room by the heaving crowd who are being treated to what seems like every track the lads have ever done, with only quick drink stops and the odd guitar change in this onslaught of rock.

Twenty-two songs apparently, which is a mighty effort, the highlights for me being the mighty ‘Yeah Hup’ chants, the raucous sing-along to ‘Hand Of Law’ and the incredible blistering, non-stop guitar solos of Deniz Tek, who after all these years is blazing his way through my mind, taking me back to better days of the past when I lived to rock.
