QMF's City Symphony Live Will Bring Brisbane's CBD To Life With The Sound Of Indie Music

The Ancient Bloods will play City Symphony (15 May).
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

To celebrate the upcoming release of the new interactive City Symphony app, QMF (formerly known as Queensland Music Festival) have curated eight hours of free, live music (15 May) that will take over Brisbane's CBD at three separate locations.

Part of QMF's plan to reignite and reinvigorate the local live music scene (check out their Queensland Music Trails initiative revealed last month), City Symphony Live is a mini-festival featuring local talent like Hope D (who won the Rock Award at this week's Queensland Music Awards), Ella Fence (who just released her new EP 'No Thank You') and MZAZA (who also won at the 2021 Queensland Music Awards scoring the World Award).

To run from 11am to 7pm, City Symphony Live will present three unique stages – from the wide open spaces of King George Square to the hustle and bustle of the Queen Street Mall, and the lush grounds of Brisbane Botanic Gardens.

"The cultural vibrancy of our CBD is such an important contributor to the way locals and visitors experience Brisbane," QMF CEO Joel Edmondson says.

"City Symphony will be a great example of how our most talented young musicians can make a real difference to how the CBD feels. It will also be a timely expression of the power of music to reconnect and rejuvenate our community."

When launched, the City Symphony app will direct participants to take in the city with a guided tour care that tells important stories from the area they're in.

"I think that any cultural events in Brisbane are just so dope," Hope D told us. "We have so many stories and so much history around us.

"I love the idea that you can walk around and hear things depending on where you are, what time of the day. . . that's so Pokemon Go!

"Remember when everyone was obsessed with that? I think that this is super dope, I think that everyone's gonna learn so much stuff. I get to be part of it and do a live gig as well. I'm really excited."

Other musical acts to join City Symphony Live are JADE New World Collective (QPAC's ensemble in residence); The Ancient Bloods (an interchanging band that's part of Digi Youth Arts mentoring platform for Indigenous young people); Kitch Wesche (who weaves cultural stories, neuroscience, and mythological storytelling fusing EDM, hip hop, beatbox loop machine and traditional instruments); and The Barefoot Boyz (who connect with audiences through bounce-your-head tracks and well-crafted lyricism).

City Symphony Live takes place 15 May (11am to 7pm) at Brisbane CBD locations: King George Square, Queen Street Mall, Brisbane Botanic Gardens. It's 100 per cent free.
