Press Club Canberra Review @ Transit Bar

Press Club played Transit Bar (Canberra) 22 November, 2018.
Raised free-range on a Darling Downs farm, Pepper has been writing and re-writing and overthinking about lots of topics from her own songs, paraphernalia and bios to rave reviews of John Mayer and sundries since time immemorial. Also: tractors.

The nation’s capital was a little extra chilled for this time of year in anticipation of a hot Press Club appointment (22 November). In the heart of the city, downstairs at Transit Bar, the hearth was smouldering.

Sports Bra were a fitting support, making emo-indie sound like a definition for emotive individualism with words like these from ‘Present Tension’: “I understand why you’re tied to the past, I’d never blame you for feeling it, but I wish you’d make some space for me, here in the present.”

Second up, White Blanks are working to ‘Get Better’ and ‘Go Right Now’ – both previously released tracks from their new EP ‘Sometimes It Takes A While... To Figure It Out’ (officially dropped the following day). TBH, they’re already great: nice job Wollongong.

Press Club rip through their first song and without a spoken word Nat launches into the second song, ‘Antidote’, a capella: “I do my best to let it go.” Bass and Nat’s signature mane feature heavily in their new song ‘He Knows Better’.

They didn’t play ‘that cover’, but they showed off some very cool, brand new material. “I don’t see you enough these days, I hope you know I’ve got your back.”

Their dynamics are great – it gives us a chance to make some extracurricular noise, in addition to chanting their anthems back at them. “I’ve been thinking about you.”

Nat notes her appreciation for the reception Canberra always gives them and says about the new track ‘Obsessive’ that “this one makes me feel really happy”. “Give up or give in, you get what you’re given.”

“Lately, I’ve been mistaken for crazy”... it’s their most streamed song, ‘Suburbia’, and ends with a good reminder about what White Blanks were talking about: going out, right now, and doing your thing.

“I can’t relate to letting all your dreams go to waste.” Amen to that.

Press Club’s tour continues in Queensland, Victoria and SA before they head to the UK next year.
