Velvet Jeanie

A singer-songwriter, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer currently residing in the mountains of Tasmania, Australian folk, rock, world music artist Velvet Jeanie mixes vaudeville and old-timey influences to create whimsical, theatrical art rock.

Currently working on her sophomore album, which she has teased with previous singles including 'Mr Nick', late last year Velvet Jeanie released another single from the album, 'In My Sky', which acts as a mantra of sorts for her recent move from Adelaide to Tasmania.

Built on lyrical positivity, 'In My Sky' weaves an optimistic spell of hope through life's trials and was the first vocal demo Velvet Jeanie ever recorded.

A song brimming with soothing, tranquil folk-rock tones that wrap themselves around you like a well-loved shawl, 'In My Sky' is a quaint journey of upbeat, buoyant beats with Velvet's bright vocals adding another layer of sunburst joy.

"I wrote 'In My Sky' as a folk-rock spell of optimism to uplift others through the feeling of loss we experience during tough life transitions," Velvet says. "'In My Sky' is also mantra I wrote to console my teenage self through the tough transition into adulthood.

"I recorded this when I was 19, with the help of arranger and studio owner Quentin Eyers, in his upstairs Norwood studio in South Australia. It was the first vocal demo I'd ever made, as I'd only been a solo pianist playing contemporary classical work up until that point."

Today, scenestr is delighted to premiere the music video for 'In My Sky' that features snippets of Jeanie performing on her piano accordion (called Edith) upon the shimmering Karrawirra Pari, meaning 'Red Gum Forest River' in native Kaurna language, also known to locals as the Torrens River. Enjoy.

"The piano accordion river scenes were filmed on a whim," Jeanie shares. "They're from a hiking trip with my friend Andy.

"We'd planned our hike ahead of time and I rang him that morning; 'Hey the sunlight is golden today. If I bring my camera gear can you film a couple minutes of me playing my accordion on the river?'

"Phone cameras aside, Andy was patient and a total newbie with the camera gear. I love that though! I feel our naivety adds to the song's essence of innocence."

Although written well before her move to the Apple Isle, 'In My Sky' doubles as a homage to her new surrounds. "Recently, I've returned to this song as I relocated from my previous home in South Australia, to my new home in the mountains of Tasmania.

"Through 2025 I felt like a tree shaking off my autumn leaves, shedding my old layers of self in preparation for my home. . . Humans forget that despite the dark moments we face, the sun still rises every day. It never gives up on us.

"If only we would look out and up in our sky up more often to notice this. Many of my darker emotional moments have gently melted away after feeling the sun beaming upon me."

With no live shows planned in the short-term future, Jeanie is inviting fans 'behind the velvet curtain' with exclusive behind the scenes access to her music.

"In February I will announce The Velvet Jeanie Troupe – a Patron-style membership on my Kofi page where fans are given exclusive behind the scenes access to my music via monthly VLOGs, behind the scenes featurettes, private discussions, unreleased music demos and more."
