The pairing of Owen Mancell on slide guitar/ stomp box/ vocals and Ryan Stone on harmonica, The Stomp'n Ramblers are a soul-blues duo steeped in the spirit of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee.
Based in Sydney's Northern Beaches, Owen ands Ryan are influenced by the likes of The Backsliders and Muddy Waters, their old-school stylings creating a timeless quality that harkens back to the glory years of vintage blues.
Both seasoned performers, as The Stomp'n Ramblers Ryan and Owen have already shared stages with the likes of Sons of the East, 19 Twenty, and Nathan Cavaleri. Last week they dropped the lead single, 'Train', from their forthcoming debut album.
A rollicking, rambunctious harmonica introduces the song, the energy lit from the get-go, the steel guitar offering the bluesy tones as the track mellows into an acoustic burner, Mancell's vocals a mix of raspy grit and honeyed comfort, like top-shelf bourbon warming your insides.
The duelling harmonica and guitar flourish together, creating a hypnotic harmony that brings those fuzzy-warm feels to the fore.
Its earthy gloriousness will soak deep inside your soul, conjuring campfire storytelling with an Australiana feel; a three-minute sonic chapter to escape the fury of our modern world and ponder simpler times.
With 'Train' released last week, today scenestr is amped to premiere the song's music video, which was filmed and edited by Riley O'Toole. Enjoy.
"We shot the video at the Royal Avalon Golf Club, a place with a real old-school feel that felt just right for us," Owen and Ryan share. "Seated in front of an open fireplace, it brought to life the storytelling atmosphere we were chasing.
"Filmed by Riley O'Toole (who also did our photos), the video captures the same tones and aesthetics that shaped the artwork of this album."
The use of Royal Avalon Golf Club as the set came about through a connection Stoney had going back years. It also provided a full-circle moment for the pair.
"There's a bit of local history in this shoot location. Stoney's been an Avalon local for years and grew up with the guys who now run the bar and food at the Club.
"Brad – who also owns Avalon Brewery – was kind enough to open up and stoke the fireplace so we could set the scene for 'Train'; and funnily enough, it was Shannon, the Avalon Golf Course green keeper, who first introduced Owen and Stoney – so bringing this video to life at the Royal felt like coming full circle."
The Stomp'n Ramblers will support Josh Cunningham & Felicity Urquhart at Avalon Beach RSL (Sydney) on 6 September before opening for Dallas Frasca's Doing Led Zeppelin show at Bridge Hotel (Sydney) on 11 October.
