Premiere: Watch The Base Coats' New Music Video 'Run'

The Base Coats are a blues-rock band from Mackay.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Direct from Central Queensland, The Base Coats are a four-piece dirty blues band peddling gritty riffs and raw, meaty rock rhythms with soulful, blazin' vocals that will inspire your inner demon to get up and shake it loose on the d-floor.

Earlier this year, they released their debut single; the whiskey-soaked, rollicking power jam 'Wild Card', a track they first wrote during a Sunday session necking nectars – Josh and Andrew were jamming on acoustic guitars when Fez and Angie started punching out some melodies and harmonies. Thus was born The Base Coats.

The second offering from the Mackay band is the equally bluesy, sultry rock of 'Run' – a track that wouldn't be out of place on the 'True Blood' soundtrack. Produced by James Russell at Heliport Studios, it's the ultimate vent song for anyone who has being jilted by a lover.

"It is all about revenge and deceit, and empowering the underdog to victory," the band explains.

The Base Coats have filmed a music video for 'Run' that portrays the band assisting a friend, whose partner is cheating on them, to get revenge.

"The film clip was an absolute riot and thank god for close theatre friends who helped The Base Coats create the feel and tone of the clip, and to Simon Pope for his filming and creative genius."

"We filmed 'Run' at our good friend's lovely house in Eimeo (Mackay)," adds Andrew, "and staged it to look as though we had broken into the cheater's house and we're going about getting revenge for his scorned lover.

"It was really funny because as we were pretending to 'trash' the place, we were trying to clean up behind us as we went so we wouldn't have to clean it all at the end. I'm talking cereal on the floor, writing on bathroom mirrors etc."

Though it was a faux trashing of the house, there was one casualty from the filming process.

"We had this fake cupcake (made out of rubber with a little plastic cherry on top)," begins Andrew, "and we are throwing stuff around in the kitchen making it look authentic, and I throw the cupcake hard outside – it smashes our friend's glass pool fence pane and kind of wrecked the vibe.

"Then we had to hang around until our friend got back and tell him the bad news. He didn't believe us at first when we called him – he was at dinner. And yeah, that cost us about the same as what it cost for filming the video – but we think it was totally worth it!"
