'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

After a two-year gap, Australian neo-psychedelic band Switch Doctor are ready to make house calls once more with new single 'Bloom'.

A song that explores the conditions of the current geological age created by human activity, Switch Doctor operate from their home-studio in rural Tennyson, north-west of Sydney.

"The song is about time and humans place within it, which is ironic as it was written over a long period of time and seemed to transform itself through different stages," bass player Jacob Hedges says.

"The lyrics centre around themes of the inevitability of change, one's discomfort of letting in new understandings and the importance of following things through," adds vocalist-guitarist Jaxon Sharp. "Sometimes you need to accept that weakness will guide the way for a new strength."

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (8 May), scenestr is stoked to premiere the trippy music video for 'Bloom' today. Psychedelic shades not included (sorry).

With psychedelic, alternative and rock musical influences ranging from Pink Floyd, Tool, Radiohead, Kikagaku Moyo, All Them Witches and Jeff Buckley, the band filmed the video on a private location known as the Tree Fern Cathedral in Mount Tomah in the Blue Mountains.

"The filming process was squeezed into one day, which is quite a feat seeing that we had to carry all the gear into the bush and be our own make-up artists," Jacob says.

The video was filmed before the catastrophic bushfires of 2019/20. "It's special to watch now as the place where it was filmed belonged to close friends of ours and it completely burned down not long after," Jacob says.

The owners are in the process of rebuilding. "The tragedy has parallels with the meanings of the song: Strength through change and rebirth."
