'Chase The Sun' is a collaboration between Steve Hensby Band and Optamus from Downsyde, and features funky brass pop with soulful vocals married to the bombastic flow of one of Perth's hip hop OGs.
Steve Hensby's 2018 began with sold-out Perth Fringe shows of the 'Steve Hensby Circus', where the band presented their double album of gypsy-circus-infused songs performed alongside circus, burlesque and aerial acts. The band have since been working on a brand-spanking new album featuring the five-piece horn section.
"['Chase The Sun'] started out when I went to Optamus' studio with an acoustic guitar and we put some demo ideas down," Steve says, a Berklee College of Music graduate and WAMI-nominated guitarist of the year.
"He got a four-bar loop happening and started writing ideas and the second time we met up I came in with the song and took it from there.
"The band and I tracked the song and then Optamus put his rhymes on top of what we had; it blew my head off the first time I heard what he put down."
First aired on RTRFM on Monday (10 December), Steve Hensby Band will launch the song proper at The Bassendean Hotel in Perth on Friday (14 December). Today, Steve has exclusively shared with scenestr the accompanying video clip to 'Chase The Sun', which we're super excited to publish for your viewing pleasure.
"Musically, we wanted the song to be soul driven and have a good groove (which comes from our rhythm section: Karl Florisson and Greg Brenton) and lyrically the tune needed to be positive," Steve adds.
"In a world where there is so much negativity, we definitely wanted to have a message of good times.
"We shot the video at Lake Monger and I think it really captures how bright Perth is. There's a lot of sun."
