A rock band who made their mark on the Brisbane scene long before Facebook and Spotify took over the world, Spillage were at their prime throughout the '90s.
Though the band came to an end as the new millennium arrived and life's other challenges took over each band member's respective lives, after a two-plus decade gap between releases, last month Spillage dropped the single 'You Said No'. A sensual, simmering film noir blues beginning makes for a scorching, snarling dive bar rock & roll rhythms; the band oscillating the fast-slow tempo between verses and choruses.
With lead vocals that are a mix of Nick Cave, Dave Graney and Tex Perkins, and lyrics many will relate to, 'You Said No' is a song that bristles with a dangerous attitude that's equally alluring.
"We've all been in that relationship with someone where you break and get back together what seems like a million times," Spillage says.
"At the time it seems normal, but on reflection it's anything but normal. 'You Said No' is a song about love, breaking-up, mixed messages and of course, being a co-dependent fruit loop."
Recorded at Blackbox Recording with mixing by Jeff Lovejoy and mastering by Matthew Gray, Spillage have filmed a music video for 'You Said No' that scenestr is amped to premiere today. Enjoy.
"We wanted the vid to have two distinct parts - like the song," the band says. "In the verses we went with a shadowy look with more formal type shots in the nightclub, and then more of a grungy, washed-out look in the choruses.
"The choruses were shot hand-held (in our practice room), which gave it bit more of a frenetic edge. The boys at Short Stack Productions did a great job."
The quartet of Sam de Pasquale, Tony de Pasquale, Nathan Kime, and David Gaukrodger, the band's implosion in the late '90s occurred after the band gave Sam some money to buy kebabs and he never came back.
While a stretch of the truth, the real story isn't that far off the mark as the band detail. "Real reasons why we imploded – we all ran off to do different things: get married, go to rehab, make movies, see the world.
"In regards to the return – we just thought it'd be cool to play a few of the old songs.
"Sam had a few newies and in the praccy room it really clicked and we had a ton of fun. Gorky joined in for some extra guitar. The whole thing grew 'arms and legs' and before we knew it, we had a dozen new songs and we were gigging again."
Spillage will launch 'You Said No' this weekend with a home-town show; they already have their next single ready to release in a month or so, with a new album set to drop this spring.
"We're having fun and hopefully our audience will enjoy it as much as we enjoy playing the songs."
Spillage play Greaser Bar (Brisbane) 19 June. They'll be joined by Burnt Trash and Wivenhoe.
