Premiere: Watch Orelia's New Music Video 'Parachute'

Adelaide band Orelia's new single is titled 'Parachute'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Quickly becoming part of Adelaide's indie music scene since the release of their upbeat debut single 'Wake Up Call' last year (launched to a sold-out crowd), Orelia (pronounced: Oh Ray Lee Ah) are a band that deserve your full attention.

Delicate yet shimmery indie pop that slow-dances with stylish jazz flourishes and tight, yet smooth instrumentation that will whisk you away to a smoky, dimly lit subterranean bar, Orelia's latest single is 'Parachute' – their first release as a four-piece featuring newest member Ellen Ferguson.

Add Chelsea Turner's honeyed-raspy vocals that weaves together a narrative about your first car and first road trip to see your first love, when everything is new, vibrant and you want it to last forever.

"'Parachute' was written with every love I've ever had in mind," shares Chelsea.

"Those first few moments of getting to know someone, driving with no destination, feeling elated by the thought of seeing them again. We wanted the instrumentation to immediately put you in that place and flow naturally through the story."

Ahead of the song's release on Friday (4 March), scenestr is stoked to premiere the 'Parachute' music video today. Enjoy.

'Parachute' is the group's second single from an upcoming six-track EP titled 'Not Another Heaven, Where The Beautiful People Go'.

"The trip-hop infused drums, floaty e-piano and layered vocals have birthed this beautiful new track," adds Chelsea, "that sits perfectly next to the songs on our upcoming EP, exploring anger, guilt, love and the end of the world, ultimately portraying the wondrous complexities of the human experience."

For the music video, the band worked with a fellow Adelaide creative. "The film clip is a homage to passionate persistence and dedication," begins drummer Troy Benson.

"Shot, directed and edited by Kristoffer Jaw-Moss from Gutter-Pop Pictures, the 'road trip gone wrong' tale celebrates trust, friendship and stopping at nothing to achieve your goals, which is much easier when you have a solid support network. It's easy when you have a parachute."

The filming process also allowed the group to lean into their rural selves, even if they did stick out to the locals.

"Filming the journey shots led to a few funny moments," Troy says, "like attracting stares from ute-driving locals in rural Australia while we traipsed along the side of the road, in skirts, lugging our instruments.

"We had to work up the courage to trespass on private property for one of the shots. The whole time we were expecting a flanny-clad farmer to pull up and tell us off, while Ellen frequently commented that it was quite a strange thing we were doing."

Orelia launch 'Parachute' at The Jade (Adelaide) 4 March.
