If you're a fan of powerful, edgy pop music with a dash of '80s nostalgia, let us introduce you to 'When It Comes To You', the debut single by Neverkid.
With influences such as Robyn, The Weeknd and Vera Blue, Brisbane's newest electronic/ indie-pop musician Neverkid is set to make waves with 'When It Comes To You' released on streaming services tomorrow (19 November).
But Neverkid has shared with scenestr the music video for the indie-pop anthem for you to enjoy today. Bonus round.
Neverkid's lyrics are laced with double meanings and imagery from Brisbane's CBD, with the chorus' catchy vocal hook cutting through bright, '80s-retro synths and a pulsating bass loop.
"Normally I write songs when I'm in a sad or reflective mood, but this song came from a place of intensity and anger and I wanted the music video to exhibit that," Neverkid says.
"Being my first release, I was also pretty keen to make sure it totally reflected me as an artist and as a person – so I'm in shorts and a t-shirt and not wearing much make-up. It's just me, in a trance, putting on a show."
The music video was filmed in her apartment's garage as well as at her old university, where she met the film crew. "I took Nicki [the videographer] to my apartment to do some planning for the shoot and showed her my garage, and she loved how grungy and menacing it looked with the cages and old brick, so we decided to film there as well."
The video features Neverkid's contorted dancing and intense performance style. "Oh I wouldn't call it dancing – I'd probably call it moving around and hoping for the best.
"I actually partially put my neck out doing the lean-back move on the Novocaine line at the end of the second verse for the first time and nearly had a heart attack when Nicki said afterwards 'can we do that shot again?'"
Having started out as the lead singer of local indie-rock band Mazer, Neverkid has hit the ground running since mid-way through this year, creating a brand-new pop vs electronic live show, with songs ranging from strong and synth-infused to dark, edgy and stripped-back.
Neverkid celebrates her single launch at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane this Wednesday (20 November) with support from two other emerging Brisbane artists, Bianca Power and Bridget Brandolini.
