Melbourne's local vessel for introspection and personal growth, lo-fi, alt indie solo project mumdeathcake is back with another offering of sullen, dour, grunge-flavoured noise rock.
After releasing his debut single 'Black-Eyed Susan' at the end of September, mumdeathcake's – the moniker of Naarm-based artist Darcy Eddy (a member of noise punks MILKSICK) – latest serving is 'What Killed The Sun'.Hazy yet crunchy lo-fi guitar intros the piece creating a gloomy, disconsolate soundscape, quickly joined by a languid, meandering rhythm section, the cymbal-heavy drums crashing through the senses as the bruised yet sublime bassline keeps the melody fluid, the beauty of the harshness exposed.
Drone-laced, mumbling vocals add to the sorrowful, dejected tones creating a blanket of apathy that's surprisingly comfortable with its angsty shoegaze draped in psych-coated emo and brought together with a fuzzy layer of distorted grunge, DIY post punk. There's even some trippy electronics that add depth to an already busy piece of lo-fi goodness.
A song made to self-hug while you head-nod away your personal stresses, 'What Killed The Sun' also offers escapism, allowing the imagination to drift and float, carried by whatever negative energy is consuming the listener that's converted to a positive awakening by song's end.
Released last week, and ahead of the song's music video dropping on Saturday (30 November), today scenestr is amped to premiere the 'What Killed The Sun' clip. Enjoy.
"This one was a hard one for me to consider putting out, I almost left it off the EP entirely and when I wrote it, I didn't dare think of it as a single," shares Darcy.
"'What Killed The Sun' was written when I was at my lowest during the COVID-19 pandemic. I was in a really hard spot both physically and mentally, being in the height of a flare-up of my ulcerative colitis and in a state of what I guess you could call grief for the loss of normalcy the entire world was experiencing.
"In a way, I'm still processing that period of my life and I know a lot of people are as well. Putting this song out for me feels a little like stepping out into the street naked in broad daylight, but it also brings a sense of closure to that period of my life, which is what has pushed me to make this one a single."
The next release for mumdeathcake will be his debut EP 'The Big Slow'. "These first two singles 'Black-Eyed Susan' and 'What Killed the Sun' were kind of intended to give you a taste of two extremes for mumdeathcake in the lead-up to my debut four-track EP 'The Big Slow', dropping sometime early next year.
"So I guess you can expect some sort of middle ground for the rest of the EP. I'm really excited to share this body of work with you all, every song means just as much to me as the last and I really feel like that's how it should be."
