A DIY music project of Naarm/ Melbourne-based indie-alt artist Darcy Eddy, self-confessed deadbeat mumdeathcake is a vessel built around themes of introspection and personal growth experienced through a personal lens.

A member of Melbourne's psych-punk gremlins MILKSICK, Darcy created mumdeathcake at the height of Victoria's pandemic lockdowns as an outlet to process his mental health and chronic illness while promoting self-acceptance around his ulcerative colitis condition (an inflammatory bowel disease that affects the digestive tract).

Self-composed, recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by Darcy, mumdeathcake's debut single is titled 'Black-Eyed Susan'. "This track represents me coming to terms with the lost years of my childhood due to mental illness as well as overcoming physical illness and the societal pressure placed on chronically-ill people to keep up with the rest of the world," Darcy says.

Warped stoner-rock that sways into dreamy garage-rock territory, 'Black-Eyed Susan' features sparse, metallic, lo-fi guitar melded to rich, plush-sounding drums and a fuzzy, warm bassline that gives the song a soothing indie sheen. Darcy's slothful, sluggish vocals detail bittersweet, reflective lyrics about personal acceptance relating to him "getting better".

Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (28 September), today scenestr is excited to share the 'glitched-out' 'Black-Eyed Susan' music video from the mind of Isaiah Mustica today. Enjoy.

"'Black-Eyed Susan' was written during the height of the COVID-19 lockdowns," adds Darcy. "At the time, I was going in and out of flare-ups of my chronic illness (ulcerative colitis) as a result of the constant stress of being immunocompromised in the middle of a global pandemic.

"Specifically, this song came about at a turning point in my treatment and the initial lifting of the lockdowns, so that contributed a lot to the upbeat, yet still mildly melancholy and tired, vibe of the track."
