A singer-songwriter from Sunshine Coast who has written 70-plus songs, amassing 600k Spotify streams, Mayah continues her path to establishing a brand of rock-pop that's groove-licious.
Off the back of just four singles – 'Butterflies (The Rush Inside)', 'Making Space', 'Loved & Lost', and 'Endless Mistakes' – Mayah has already established herself locally, assembling a veteran band (playing Caloundra Music Festival – twice – and Yandina Street Fair) as well as being an advocate for youth mental health – Mayah is an ambassador for the Sunshine Coast's Nurture Festival.A regular content creator posting singing videos on TikTok and Instagram, the next chapter in Mayah's music journey is the single 'Traffic Light'.
Recorded, mixed and mastered with Bob Brierty at Bobos Productions, 'Traffic Light' finds Mayah exploring a groovier side of her music, incorporating an upbeat rhythm.
A vibrant dance bop to lift spirits when lingering thoughts of misguided passion won't leave your mind, 'Traffic Light' is an energetic slice of sad-girl bedroom pop.
An exotic guitar riff gives off Latin, surf-rock vibes alongside lush, enchanting percussion that intertwines around mellow keys.
Mayah's breathy yet resolute vocals add weight to the romantic feels being processed as she laments receiving 'confusing signs'.
With 'Traffic Light' released last week, today scenestr is thrilled to premiere the song's music video. Enjoy.
"'Traffic Light' emerged from a throw-away comment made by a high school student in my grade. He told me I was like a traffic light and the idea really captured my imagination," Mayah says.
"I feel the idea we often give out and receive confusing signals from each other is one that is played out in many situations. I know I felt very misunderstood, especially in high school, and I imagine this is the case for many people.
"When I sat down to write the song, the words and chords flowed really easily. I guess the song was just waiting to be written."
Originally penned in 2021, the relaxed energy of recording 'Traffic Light' locally also enhanced the overall experience for Mayah.
"Recording 'Traffic Light' was like a dream come true. We worked with a new local music producer with a studio within ten minutes from my home. We had the song down in two days and made only minor edits after that.
"This song diverges a little from my previous songs in that it has much more of a pop groove. I'm really excited to share this one, it's great fun."
Mayah launches 'Traffic Light' at The Presynct (Sunshine Coast) 21 October.
