Sydney DIY indie musician Jovi Skyler's newest single is 'If You Think So', a song that explores the toxicity of falling into friendships that do more harm than good.
Swirling, manic, grungy alt rock that spews forth angsty flavours, Jovi adds some pop sensibilities to the mix with smatterings of 'shun na na na na's' throughout. The song also features a melodic breakdown two-thirds through, Jovi getting inside his feels for a hot minute before the track explodes back into life with a maelstrom of conflicting punk-rock and grunge tones.
"I obviously have a thing for Sonic Youth," admits Jovi. "The track is a messy, experimental sound of heaven for me. There is a great mix of sounds: punk, shoegaze, garage and of course nod to '90s grunge."
Ahead of the song's release tomorrow (19 May), scenestr is delighted to premiere another of Skyler's DIY video clips for 'If You Think So'. Enjoy.
"I conjured an atmosphere for the music video of pure abandon, tried to give it a colourful, psychedelic vibe, and make it visually interesting as possible, to reflect the eccentricity of the track itself," Jovi says.
"The music video gets a bit hectic at times, but hopefully it's entertaining enough and matches the energy of 'If You Think So'."
'If You Think So' features on Jovi's debut album, 'Nothing To Do', which also lands tomorrow (19 May).
"I think there is a palpable sort of nervous energy and moody ambience that comes across in my songs on 'Nothing To Do' that mirror my lyrics, raw passion and authority.
"Well, at least that's what I try to do in my music; be sincere as possible, and to create an immersive experience for myself to break free."
